Frequently Asked Questions About Udaipur
Three days is the ideal length for Udaipur. You can comfortably cover City Palace, Lake Pichola, Jag Mandir, Saheliyon ki Bari, and the old city bazaars without rushing. Two days works if you are tight on time but you will miss the slower, magical side of the city that most visitors say is the best part.
Udaipur is known as the City of Lakes and is one of the most romantic cities in all of India. It is most famous for the stunning City Palace complex on the banks of Lake Pichola, the iconic Lake Palace hotel that appears to float on the water, and its beautifully preserved old city of whitewashed havelis and narrow winding lanes. It was also a filming location for the James Bond film Octopussy in 1983.
October to March is the best time to visit Udaipur. The weather is cool and comfortable, ranging from 10 to 28°C, which is perfect for exploring the lakes and palaces on foot. September and early October are also beautiful as the monsoon fills the lakes to their fullest and the surrounding hills turn lush green. Avoid May and June when temperatures regularly cross 40°C.
They offer very different experiences. Jaipur is larger, busier, and better for forts, jewelry shopping, and Rajasthani cultural experiences. Udaipur is smaller, quieter, and far more romantic — built around lakes with a slower pace that rewards travelers who simply want to sit by the water and soak it in. Most visitors who do both say Udaipur feels more personal and memorable. If you can only choose one, Udaipur wins for honeymooners and leisure travelers while Jaipur suits history and culture seekers.
From Delhi, the fastest option is a direct flight to Udaipur’s Maharana Pratap Airport which takes about 1.5 hours. IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet operate daily services. By train, the Mewar Express from Delhi Hazrat Nizamuddin takes around 12 hours overnight and drops you right in the city. From Mumbai, direct flights take approximately 1.5 hours and are the most practical option. The airport is 22 km from the city center and taxis take about 30 minutes.
